The complex issue of how we use the land takes a bit more thought as modern farming systems have developed over the centuries as science has produced technological advancements we all benefit from in the form of standardised cheap food.
This is just one case where progress ignores balance for profit. It is the only way to supply the growing demand for higher welfare eggs in volume. Most hens will not use the land available nor will the land benefit from such intensive use.
